Moving and Leaving

Hard At Work - Union Style
Granted "leaving" is going to be some where far into the future I felt that this page should encapsulate the entire process. Moving being the matter currently at hand there will be a fair bit of material to share. I can only hope that when we leave there will be as much material to share granted the the Lord permits me to be around that long.

Irony being a key fundamental in my life I grabbed the truck from U-Haul at 0730 hrs in the morning. Of course the two places I needed to grab things from did not open, either one, until 0900 hrs. So I planted the biggest, and most productive, part of my body on the edge of the truck and proceeded to use my time contemplating the deeper cosmic relevance of my life. While the fullest answer eluded me a hot decaf and a plain stick were useful tools in my exploration.

In seriousness, the truck in the background provided me with some distraction while I waited for the storage facility to open. I was not one of the "cool kids" who owned an outside accessible unit but they still talked with me. Mostly about Habitat and Restore which is okay by me - I totally pimp myself out on that subject. I digress though.

I always forget my unit number, for the purposes of signing in, but I can walk there blindfolded. Cracked open the unit and moved what we had there to the conveyer. A conveyer is, in this case, an non-passenger elevator. Let me tell you, the amount of stairs to reach my unit this is a cruel thing indeed. However given the apparent age of the contraption - I'll take the damn stairs regardless.

The only thing we had in storage was a nice bedroom set we purchased at the Restore a couple months ago. Simply didn't have the room in our apartment so storage it went. Now we have a house, out of storage it came. My wife wanted to help but we also had a cleaning service scheduled to arrive this particular morning, between 9 - 10 am, and we both felt the cleaning was extremely important. (The crew never showed up btw).

I captured some video footage that'll be share interspersed in this part of the dialogue. Let me just conclude this segment with: OMG I hurt! And no, to Athre, it is not because Yvonne spanked me for my joking around with her.

The day before all of this I had the time of my life putting up trusses for a new roof. An experience I'll treasure but, well, uh, it is a lot of work. In my health, lingering painful work. So we will be moving furniture every couple of weeks so that my broke behind can recover enough to be part of the moving. Fortunately we do not have to move "RIGHT NOW" like so many moves in the past. I kept our current landlord informed about the house buying, the closing, and the when we are leaving the premises. Got plenty of time left - enough to let an old man do the job!

A great disservice would be done to my wife if I did not talk about how much she's carried the packing of our belongings. Since that first day, my time has been consumed with Habitat For Humanity matters but no longer. Today I've made a concentrated effort in getting packed and moved.

I've emptied all the stored belongings that we had in the basement of the apartment house. It was quite a bit I'm sad to say. I've also got 50% of my office dismantled and either packed or moved over to the new house. My wife was rather stunned, and pleased, at how much I accomplished in the few hours before she woke up and saw the results. I'm sure she's going to be flabbergasted at what I've accomplished since she left for work.

Shamelessly I called my soon-to-be former landlord and asked if he'd carry some furniture in the back of his pick up. Marty is a good guy and not a bad landlord so he gleefully swung by and did me that favor. He also did a nice walk through of the new house expressing his delight with our new house.

Okay, furniture moving day was the 19th of September. Got a young man by the name of Eric (from the Restore) to assist me and boy did he help with a large exclamation point! My only mistake that day was keeping up with him. Spent the next three days rubbing in aspercreme and icy hot on my back almost non-stop. However in about 4 hours we got all the furniture moved lickety split.

Thursday we had the Pod picked up and was to be delivered but the truck had an equipment failure. I was a bit dismayed over this as I had asked people to swing by in the morning to assist with the unpacking. I figured with many hands it would not take very long at all. Pods pulled it out though by delivering the Pod just after 7 am Friday morning.

When I started the unloading I was predicting a grumpy day for me but again Eric came to the rescue in a big way. Not only was his help enough to make unpacking go really really fast but just having one person show up kept me from feeling abandoned by many of those I've spent my own energy on. (Let's be honest, no matter how christian the soul wants to be pettiness does rear its head.) So with Eric and my wife helping me, the pod that took a couple of weeks to fill was emptied within an hour.
